Phones and so forth

I'm now past time for an upgrade to the trusty but occasionally clunky LG U990 (or "Viewty").

My current inclination is towards something Android-based. Anybody got views as to what's good there or want to suggest that iPhone or something else would be a better bet?

The contract is presently with 3, but after the appalling customer service when I got the current gadget I'm looking to shift elsewhere.
