Cracking racing
Jul. 12th, 2010 12:51 pmSurprisingly I don't feel too tired today after a long weekend at Silverstone.
pennyanne has to be in work half an hour before gates open to the public, which meant alarms going off at 0430 on Friday/Saturday and 0330 on Sunday. A couple of marshalling friends were putting us up in Towcester for Fri/Sat nights otherwise it would have been even earlier - and meant that I got to try to go back to sleep for an hour or two and got a lift in with them both days.
Some good stuff went on in the support races and I had fine company with a few of Penny's friends over the various days, watching from various different points Fri/Sat - in one of the covered grandstands for preference given the heat. The Arena stand is pretty good for watching - you can see the cars through Becketts and down at Stowe as well at through Village/Loop/Aintree immediately in front of you. The GP itself we were at Vale and could see the cars coming down Hangar, through Stowe and Club and just about see what was going on at Village. A few good passes in front of us - particularly Button on the first lap. I thought it was a very good race - the various issues that Button and Vettel had made it very entertaining watching them work up through the field, but there was good racing going on all over the place (between Glock and Kovaleinen in particular). A good result too - a win for Webber and decent points places for both McLaren and Williams.
A pair of us who weren't marshalling were sent in to the drivers' autograph session after qualifying on Saturday to get some programmes and a couple of caps signed, which will be raffled off at the marshals' social next year to raise funds for the air ambulance. Nice to meet a few drivers, but for me the highlight was just talking to friends who were trackside at various points and their wanting to know why the hell I wasn't. It's really encouraging that they think I'm good enough.
